Fall in Love with E-Bikes: Why They Are Good for Your Heart, Your Wallet & the People You Love

February is all about showing a little love: love for the people in your life, your health, and the place you call home. If you are looking for a simple way to care for all three, e-bikes are worth a closer look.

Across California, more people are choosing e-bikes for commuting, errands, and everyday trips. They are a clean transportation option that make getting around easier, more affordable, and more enjoyable.

Why more people are choosing e-bikes

E-bikes make biking accessible to more people. With pedal assist, riders can tackle hills, longer distances, and daily errands without arriving sweaty or exhausted. That flexibility makes e-bikes a great option for a wide range of ages, fitness levels, and lifestyles.

Many everyday trips are shorter than we think. It often only takes a few miles to travel for errands, school drop-offs, commuting to work, or visiting friends. For short trips like these, e-bikes can be a convenient alternative to driving.

Good for your heart: The health benefits of e-bikes

E-bikes support regular, low-impact physical activity. Riders control how much assistance they use, which makes it easier to move at a comfortable pace and ride more often.

Regular riding can support cardiovascular health, mobility, and overall well-being. Because e-bikes reduce some of the physical barriers of traditional biking, many people find that they ride more frequently than they would on a standard bike.

Good for your wallet: Save money with electric bike commuting

E-bikes can also be a smart financial choice. Compared to owning and driving a car, e-bikes cost far less to operate and maintain. Charging an e-bike uses very little electricity, and riders can save money on gas, parking, and the cost of vehicle wear and tear.

Many people use e-bikes to replace just a few car trips each week. That small change can lead to meaningful savings over the course of a year, especially for commuters.

Good for the people you love: Cleaner air & quieter streets

Transportation choices affect a whole community. E-bikes do not produce any tailpipe emissions, which helps reduce air pollution in neighborhoods. Cleaner air supports better health for everyone, especially children, older adults, and people with asthma or other respiratory conditions.

E-bikes also lead to quieter streets and more active communities. When more people choose clean transportation options, neighborhoods become safer, healthier, and more enjoyable places to live.

Is an e-bike right for you? Here’s a quick checklist

An e-bike could be a great fit if you:

E-bike safety basics for confident riding

Safety is an important part of enjoying your ride. Whether you are brand new to e-bikes or an avid biker, a few safety basics can go a long way:

    • Wear a helmet and bright or reflective clothing
    • Use front and rear lights, especially in low light
    • Follow traffic laws and ride predictably
    • Use hand signals and make eye contact when possible
    • Practice riding in low-traffic areas

Making e-bikes more affordable with PCE

To help make clean transportation more accessible, PCE offers an e-bike rebate of up to $1,000 for income-qualified customers. The program supports residents in San Mateo County and the City of Los Banos who want to replace car trips with a cleaner, more affordable way to get around.

A small change that can make a big difference

E-bikes are good for your heart, your wallet, and the people you love. You don’t need to ride every day or replace every car trip to see the  benefits. Even a few rides per week can help save money, support your health, and reduce pollution in your community.

This February, consider whether an e-bike could become part of your routine and help you fall in love with a cleaner way to get around.
