Position Summary

We are a local public agency that launched in San Mateo County in 2016, and expanded to Los Banos in 2022. We provide clean electricity and customer savings to 88% of the homes and businesses in Los Banos. Peninsula Clean Energy saved Los Banos customers an estimated $1 million on their energy bills and invested more than $470,000 in local community benefits in the first year of service.
We seek a full-time Los Banos Community Relations Associate Manager/Manager, reporting to the Senior Manager of Community Relations. They will be responsible for communicating customer benefits and building and maintaining excellent relationships with the community of Los Banos. They will also engage major stakeholders throughout Merced County as needed.
A strong candidate will be a quick learner with highly professional written and verbal communication and people skills. They will be enthusiastic about clean energy, clean air, and serving the community of Los Banos. While previous energy industry experience is not required, a strong candidate will enjoy absorbing complex energy-related information and communicating it simply and accurately to customers. Previous experience may be in community relations, outreach, communications, community development, local government, policy, education, social services, energy-related sales, or a similar field. Spanish language proficiency is strongly preferred.
Peninsula Clean Energy is a remote-first work environment, and the person in this position will work from home. They will also attend frequent in-person stakeholder meetings and community events in the City of Los Banos and greater Merced County, and travel as needed (generally monthly/quarterly) to San Mateo County. Residency in Merced County is required, and in Los Banos is strongly preferred.
Overview Of Responsibilities
The Los Banos Community Outreach Associate Manager/Manager will grow customer awareness of and support for Peninsula Clean Energy in Los Banos. They will develop and implement community relations strategies including broad local outreach, customer education, diverse stakeholder engagement, marketing, and customer support.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Design and implement an effective community outreach strategy to inform and engage customers in the City of Los Banos, in both English and Spanish
- Represent Peninsula Clean Energy in Los Banos and Merced County with a high level of professionalism, in meetings and presentations as well as in daily community interactions
- Effectively and enthusiastically communicate the customer benefits of Peninsula Clean Energy verbally and in writing using a wide variety of communications channels including tabling at events, stakeholder meetings, presentations, email, traditional media, and social media
- Identify and develop positive relationships with community leaders and key
influencers in all segments of the community - Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Peninsula Clean Energy’s dynamic customer offerings in order to represent the organization with a high level of accuracy
- Communicate complex energy programs and offerings in simple terms
- Solicit input and feedback from community members and proactively work with the rest of the Peninsula Clean Energy staff to address any concerns raised
- Collaborate closely with the rest of the Peninsula Clean Energy marketing and
community relations teams in developing key messages and collateral for
residents and businesses in Los Banos - Help residential and commercial customers understand their energy bills, savings and rebates they may be eligible for, and provide customer support as needed
- Design and implement additional community outreach and government relations
in the region as needed - Staff monthly meetings of the Peninsula Clean Energy Board of Directors in person from Los Banos City Hall. Meetings are usually the 4th Thursday of the month in the evenings
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Education and Experience:
- At least 4-7 years of progressively responsible experience in community service-oriented roles
- Significant experience living or working in Merced County, preferably in Los Banos
- A valid California driver’s license
Knowledge and Understanding:
- Highly professional written and verbal communication skills
- Experience developing and implementing community outreach strategies
- Outgoing, friendly, and relationship-oriented people skills
- Effective presentation and public speaking skills
- Fast learner, ability to absorb complex new information quickly and communicate
in simple terms - Responsible and collaborative team player
- Basic understanding of clean energy and its impact on the climate
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and comfortable learning
additional computer software and databases as needed
Ability to:
- Manage multiple priorities and quickly adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced
dynamic environment - Quickly learn complex concepts in the energy industry and communicate them simply for customers
- Demonstrate patience, tact, and courtesy
- Take responsibility and work independently, as well as coordinate team efforts
within Peninsula Clean Energy - Be thorough and detail-oriented
- Work accurately and swiftly under pressure
- Work some evenings and weekends as needed to represent the organization at
community meetings and events - Travel to San Mateo County and within Merced County as needed
- Physical ability to transport, carry, set up, and take down displays at community events including a 10’x10’ folding canopy, 6’ table, and large boxes of materials up to 30 lbs
Desired Qualifications:
- Long-time resident of Los Banos who is highly engaged in the local community
- Bilingual or fluent in both English and Spanish
- Familiarity with the energy sector
- Experience with utility or local government operations
